Zimbabwe’s annual Mr. Ugly contest turned uglier than usual when the winner was accused of cheating, setting off a fracas at the event.
Mison Sere won over the judges Saturday with a series of grotesque expressions that complemented a smile in desperate need of dental work.
But reigning champion William Masvinu, who hadn’t lost an ugliness challenge in three years, and his entourage mobbed the judges after the decision. They claimed Sere “was too handsome” to win and argued that his AWOL teeth were an artificial enhancement.
“I am naturally ugly. He is not. He is ugly only when he opens his mouth,”
Masvinu beat Fanuel Musekiwa to the crown, picking up the $500 cash prize and a cow.
“No one can dispute that I am the ugliest person in Zimbabwe.” said Masvinu after his win. “I now want to take my ugliness outside the country. If there is Mr Ugly World, I am confident I will bring the crown to Zimbabwe,”
Masvinu is now a five time Mr Ugly in his home country, a feat which has made him as much a celebrity as the most famous musicians and actors in the country.
